Toowoomba Grammar School's Masterplan

Toowoomba Grammar School has embarked on an exciting new phase with the commencement of our inspiring Masterplan. This landmark project, which aligns with the School’s Strategic Plan 2022-2026, supports us in our vision of giving the boys of Toowoomba Grammar School the skills to be independent, well balanced and successful in life, responding well to challenges and achieving lifelong wellbeing.

The Masterplan is a multi-year project which is designed to anticipate the needs of students in our rapidly changing global society and to provide our current and future boys with outstanding learning environments and opportunities. Including the Design, Engineering and Technology Centre and an Agriculture and Industry Centre in the first phase, this project will further position the School as an innovative leader in education.

It will give TGS the opportunity to increase subject offerings, facilitate diverse options and introduce a more inter-disciplinary and contextual approach to the study of design, engineering, technologies, agriculture and other related industries.

Design, Engineering and Technology Centre

We are excited to announce the commencement of construction of the first major development of the Masterplan – the Design, Engineering and Technology (DET) Centre.

Through enhanced curricular and co-curricular programs, students will work with emerging technologies to develop the skills needed to thrive in our rapidly advancing digital landscape. This unique learning environment will empower the next generation of innovators, entrepreneurs and enterprising thinkers, ready to shape the future and seize opportunities in the tech-driven global economy.

“The world-class centre will include a Junior School-focused technology room, two large contemporary workshops with an associated timber machinery room, two engineering workshops; rooms for robotics, e-sports, design and 3D printing; a 180 seat lecture theatre, lecturette room, virtual and extended reality room, and function space - all designed to allow for hands-on learning and critical thinking for both Junior and Senior School students.”

Providing outstanding learning environments, like this one, is an important part of our vision to ensure our boys leave TGS with the skills to be independent, well-balanced and successful in life.

Agriculture and Industry Centre

The Agriculture and Industry Centre (AIC) will expand the School’s curriculum offerings with a strong focus on future and industry focused subjects in the area of Agricultural Science and Environment, Technology, Engineering and vocational pathways in these fields. This will occur through the provision of research spaces, industry collaboration, modern laboratories and facilities as well as construction and manufacturing workshops.

The Masterplan supports our vision to continue sending quality graduates out into the world, with the skills to respond proficiently to challenges and achieving lifelong wellbeing through meaningful engagement in their work opportunities and career.

Work will commence following construction of the DET Centre.

Future Projects

The Masterplan will be delivered in a staged approach over several years. The first phase, known as the Herries Street Precinct including the DET Centre and AIC, will see the development of this Technologies Precinct to expand and consolidate the existing Industrial Design and Technologies (IDT) resources across the campus. This phase has also included relocating The J.M. Blaikie Health Centre to the boarding precinct.

Focusing on the DET Centre and AIC in the first instance allows the School to:

  • Expand these facilities to meet the increasing demand for these subjects.
  • Consolidate facilities across the Junior and Senior School.
  • Enhance spaces in the Junior School to allow for increased specialist facilities.
  • Create space in the north-eastern area of the campus for the future redevelopment of boarding facilities.

As a proud boarding school, TGS remains fully committed to, and invested in, our boarding program. Following the completion of Phase One, the School will then focus attention on a significant upgrade of our boarding facilities. We are in the early stages of planning concepts for the Boarding Village and will soon begin a program of community consultation with our boarding families, students and staff.

The full Masterplan includes reference to developing increased connectivity between the Junior and Senior School through a central promenade as well as potential upgrades to creative arts, the Assembly Hall and Dent Library as well as early learning services. Each project in the later phases will be delivered in a staged approach, with works scheduled during times that minimise disruption to students, staff, families and neighbours, as much as possible.

This Masterplan is an outward expression of our commitment to continually deliver the very best in all aspects of education and life at Toowoomba Grammar School. It is the beginning of an exciting and transformational season for the TGS community; a season that will honour our heritage, reinforce our culture of excellence and propel our students into the future with the best possible preparation in life.

Ministerial Infrastructure Designation

In September 2023 the School received Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) for the project from the Queensland Government.

Under the Planning Act 2016, Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) is a process for the delivery of certain infrastructure projects which allows for a streamlined approach to project planning, prevents the need for selected development approvals that might otherwise be required and recognises the importance of the project to the community.

The School was notified of the MID on 18 August 2023 by the Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, the Honourable Steven Miles MP. Under this process, formal public consultation with key community members was undertaken, including with the council and neighbours of the East Toowoomba campus.

What capital works and changes are in the Masterplan?

The first phase of the Masterplan includes the upgrade of the Herries Street carpark, the Design, Engineering and Technology Centre, the Agriculture and Industry Centre and the first stage of the Boarding Precinct. Information on future phases will be available soon. This page will be updated as plans develop and are approved.

How will this affect my child’s education?

All works and developments will be scheduled at times to minimise disruption to learning and experience, though we recognise that there may be some adjustments required by staff, students and families. Toowoomba Grammar School will remain committed to continually delivering the very best in all aspects of education and student life.

Who is making these decisions?

As the bodies entrusted to provide strategic and operational leadership and governance, and ensuring the School is sustainable for future generations, the Executive Team and the Board of Trustees are working together to finalise and approve plans.

How much will it cost? How will the School pay for this project?

We will have a better idea of the financial implications once further detailed plans are in place. Additional financing will likely be required, which will be actively managed by School.
